Flat Laurel Creek Trail

About

Length: 7.5
Rating: Moderate
Dogs: On Leash

Escape the crowds and explore the beauty of Flat Laurel Creek Trail, a hidden gem nestled below Sams Knob and Black Balsam Knob. This moderate out-and-back trail offers a peaceful hiking experience in the high-elevation valley surrounded by stunning peaks, grassy balds, and spruce-fir forests.

Starting at the parking area on Black Balsam Road, the trail gradually descends along the flank of Sams Knob. While not overly steep, there are some rocky and eroded sections to navigate, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. Additionally, certain areas of the trail can be wet and muddy, so it’s advisable to come prepared.

Throughout the hike, you’ll be treated to a variety of picturesque landscapes, including shaded forests, flowing streams (requiring rock hopping), open meadows, waterfalls like Wildcat Falls and rocky ascents. Take your time and soak in the serene ambiance and natural beauty of the surroundings. For those seeking a longer adventure, the trail connects to the Mountains to Sea Trail and offers the option to extend your hike to the cascades along Flat Laurel Creek and Black Balsam.

Please note that weather conditions can change quickly in this area, so it’s important to be prepared and check the forecast before embarking on your journey. Restroom facilities are not available on the trail.
