Clyde, NC History
Although the origin of Clyde’s name is a topic of debate amongst locals, one thing’s for certain: this is a place that appreciates, understands, and respects its long history in the heart of Appalachia. It’s the home of the “oldest frame house west of the Blue Ridge,” the Shook-Smathers House, built in 1795. The town was incorporated nearly 100 years after and was widely known as a major livestock shipping point. Since then, Clyde has made efforts to remember important moments and sacrifices made throughout American history. In the town’s seal, you’ll see the “Big Gun,” a 50 mm anti-aircraft gun commemorating Clyde’s veterans who gave their lives during World War I and II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. The 9/11 Memorial in front of the Clyde Volunteer Fire Department consists of two steel beams recovered from the debris of the World Trade Center. And, located throughout Clyde, you’ll find the second-largest number of quilt blocks on the Haywood County Quilt Trails.
