Located in the Pisgah National Forest, this out and back trail follows along the Art Loeb Trail then splits to lead to the summit of Cold Mountain, the highest peak in the Shining Rock Wilderness sitting at 6030′ elevation. Most known for the best-selling Charles Frazier novel Cold Mountain and the acclaimed 2003 motion picture. Ideal months for hiking Cold Mountain fall between May to October due to Snow and icy conditions covering the peak for most of the other months. Great trail for wildflower lovers featuring several Trillium varieties. This challenging hike will take you on a climb of 3000′ in elevation. Near the summit you will find a flat rock outcropping giving way to wide open views.

Trail Insights

  • From Camp Daniel Boone follow the Art Loeb Trail up 3.8 miles to Deep Gap and take the Cold Mountain spur on the left another 1.5 miles to the summit.
  • There is a campsite near the summit.
  • Wear layers – temperatures can be comfortable at the base of the trail but chilly at the summit.

Directions
Park in the Art Loeb Trailhead parking lot. The trailhead is located at Camp Daniel Boone, located off NC 215 (Lake Logan Road).
