The Qualla Boundary is the sovereign land of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The 57,000-acre parcel of land makes up only a small portion of the Cherokee’s historic territory, which stretches throughout the Southeast.
Though sometimes referred to as the Cherokee Reservation, the Qualla is not technically a reservation––the Cherokee tribe purchased the land back from the federal government in the 1870s, and it is now held in trust.
