Waynesville in the fall offers an unparalleled magic. Whether frolicking on Main Street or hiking a mountain peak, the scenery explodes with vibrant autumn colors. Leaf lookers from near and far enjoy this beautiful time of year. Along with the natural splendor, the fall season is bustling with events. Take a break from outdoor recreation to experience one or more of the following fall activities.
Church Street Art & Craft Show: Saturday, October 12, 10 am to 5 pm
The Church Street Art & Craft Show is in its 36th year and while it originally only spanned small Church Street, it’s since grown to fill all of Main Street. Attendees come from miles around to peruse items and products created by regional artists, jewelers, crafts people and more. Grab your coffee or pumpkin spice latte and enjoy a day shopping. With it being mid-October, it’s a great place to get started on holiday shopping. Your gift recipient will delight in an item or ware that’s locally made or otherwise exceptional.
Haywood County Fairgrounds: Various Events
Historically, the Haywood County Fairgrounds existed to host the annual county fair, held once a year in late August. Over the years, the fairgrounds have evolved into a hub for other shows and activities. Attending events at the fairgrounds offers locals and visitors a change of pace and different vibe than that of the downtown area. This fall you’ll find flea markets, the Duck Duck Goose children’s clothing sale, craft fairs and more. Be sure to follow the Fairgrounds Facebook page or check their website to stay abreast of events and happenings.
Apple Harvest Festival: Saturday, October 19, 10 am to 5 pm
The Apple Harvest Festival is touted as one of the top 10 fall harvest festivals in the nation. This event not only honors the autumn harvest season, but celebrates everything apple, including tarts, pies, ciders, turnovers and more. Along with getting your fill of apple pleasures, you’ll find a slew of potters, jewelers, crafters and other types of artists, along with live music, traditional dancing and food vendors. If you’re looking for an event to fully get you in the mood for fall, this is the one.
Art After Dark
One stroll down Main Street and you’ll realize that art is the heart and soul of Waynesville. To honor this, the Galleries of Haywood County host an event called Art After Dark, held the first Friday of each month during the fall season from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The majority of Main Street merchants stay open late to welcome guests, while art galleries offer art demonstrations, appetizers and drinks. Live music can be heard both in the stores and on the street. With an ever-changing lineup of art displays and musicians, there’s always a unique vibe at Art After Dark. If you love to stroll arm-in-arm with a friend or loved one, while perusing independent shops and galleries, this is the event for you.
